  72. I have a question.  I'm currently using a Yaesu FT-530 HT my only radio.  I
  73. can reach the local repeaters ok, but would like to reach farther out. 
  74. I've thought about installing a base antenna and wonder if it is possible
  75. to attach any type of power amplifier to increase my output.  Is this
  76. possible with an HT?  Or should I just start saving my money and get a base
  77. unit?

  99. Yes, it is possible and done quite frequently.  RF Concepts, Mirage, and
  100. other manufactures make 2m, 440, and 2m/440 amps of various output power
  101. levels (and prices to match).  Check in any radio equipment catalog for a
  102. full listing.  A basic 2m model will run about $200 (+/-) new.

  128. And you can get them used for CONSIDERABLY less.  A 2 in/30 out 2 meter
  129. amplifier WITH preamp can be had for about $100 used, and sometimes 
  130. even less.  I picked up an older VoCom 2 in/25 out 2 meter FM amp that 
  131. does the job.  It's ugly.  It's VERY small and gets REALLY HOT.

  133. It also cost me $20 at a hamfest, and I've been using it for 6 years!
  134. I picked up an identical one at a yard sale last year for a buck!  And
  135. it's in better shape than the first.  Now there's one in each car.

  163. As I understand it, early models had the audio deviation pot set too low
  164. and the touch tone deviation set too high.  The settings produced low
  165. audio and DTMF tones were not accepted by repeaters. I also noticed that
  166. the same early models had a different default frequency when reset as well
  167. as some strange additional defaults that are changed when programming.
  168. I do not know where the pot's are that must be adjusted.  Has anyone
  169. bought the service manual?  I believe audio deviation is normally  about
  170. 3.5 KHz and DTMF deviation is ~2.5 KHz.

  195. I am just getting into amateur radio and would like some advice/opinions
  196. on equipment.  I am currently studying to take all test elements at one
  197. time to get my Extra class license.  In the meantime I have been kind of
  198. looking around at radios and such just to get a feel for prices.  I would
  199. like to get the net hams' preferences/comments about rigs they use or have
  200. used, things like quality, performance, etc.  Initially I will be looking
  201. at HF rigs, something post 1980 or so.  I am also welcome your comments on
  202. older rigs, especially some of the proven performers like Drake and
  203. Collins.  Information about VHF/UHF rigs is also appreciated as that
  204. purchase will happen, just a bit further down the road.

  267. can't think of what the exact name of this thing is,but the common sounds 
  268. are :Woman's Orgasm,Tarzan yell,sirens(foghorns?),and of course,ECHO!I know

  301. It sounds extremely like an electronic fog horn/power hailer for use on a
  302. boat. I used to have one built by (well, built by me, but the product of)
  303. Heathkit, which was, in case anyone cares, a GREAT device which I stupidly
  304. sold when I sold that boat.

  306. FOG1 & FOG2 are different noise/silence patterns depending on whether
  307. you're in offshore or inland waters (if memory serves) and AGND I assume
  308. stands for "aground".

  310. Sound reasonable? Was it really a mic jack you're used to seeing on a rig?
  311. Or a simpler one since it's only a P.A.  (Maybe an intercom, too,
  312. depending on the model...)
